DJ Quik was contemplating retirement around this time last year. He was ready to part with his cherished equipment and turn the lights off on the studio. Things did stay quiet for a while, before Quik thankfully had a change of heart.

To make it all come full circle, the Compton OG’s preparing to release on his new album The Midnight Life. The album’s title comes from a dark, quiet place. “That’s the best time for making music in my opinion,” Quik explains. “It’s quiet, especially if you’re in a recording studio. You can hear everything and you know everybody’s asleep. You can sneak and do your best work.”

The project’s his ninth studio album and the Quiksta thinks it may be one of his best. “Musically, this album is a bulls-eye for me,” Quik says. “Can’t nobody tell me different because I’ve seen it give people chills. I’ve seen it make people happy, smile, drink, party, dance, ask for it on repeat. This album is for people who like to have fun.” All of which sound like the proper ingredients for another quality batch of funk from a legend.
