Ghostface Killah released his debut solo album Ironman October 29, 1996 on Epic Records. The album was mainly produced by fellow Wu member RZA and has a different sound from previous solo Wu-Tang albums released prior. Samples from classic 1960s and 1970s blaxploitation films, as well as a wider range of soul samples can be found in layers through out the album. Ironman is also notable for being considerably more open in its references tothe Nation of Gods and Earths and the group’s beliefs.
In 1997, the album was certified gold in sales by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), and in 2004, it was certified platinum after sales of one million copies in the United States. Many music critics have praised the album for Ghostface’s imaginative lyricism and RZA’s production style. Someconsider this album one of the greatest Wu-Tang solo albums of all time.
