Nas Releases Clothing Line To Support and Help Black Youth

Nas has been known to be an advocate for black youth and has supported many social issues in the political climate we’re currently in, and he’s just released a clothing line to help support and donate money to the National Black Child Development Institute. Using his HSTRY brand to release the new line of clothing, the line includes dashikis, dad hats, graphic tees, and more. Including classic cartoon characters turned into pro-black versions of them, some of the graphic tees have Bart Simpson, Charlie Brown and The Pink Panther. Check out the amazing line and Nas’ previous lines through his HSTRY brand here.

Nas Just Released Ugly Christmas Sweaters, Donating Proceeds To Raise Money For Prison Reform

nas

Nas just officially jumped on the bandwagon of releasing ugly Christmas sweaters and I’m personally here for it! Nasir ‘Nas’ Jones has worked with his clothing brand HSTRY to release “Kneeling Santa” Christmas sweaters and is donating proceeds to The Center for Court Innovation “to help create a more effective and humane justice system, reducing both crime and incarceration.” The kneeling Santa is representing Colin Kaepernick of the San Francisco 49ers kneeling during the national anthem to protest police brutality. Nas told HuffPost, “Colin Kaepernick recently took this powerful stance, and like him, we love America – but also cannot ignore the injustices we have been seeing and how important our fight is against them” If you want a ‘Kneeling Santa’ sweater, you can buy them here!

New Classic: DJ Khaled – Nas Album Done ft. Nas

DJ Khaled and Nas debut a dope cinematic visual for “Nas Album Done.” The entire caribbean-set clip totals to almost nine minutes long and features dancehall legend Louie Rankin reprising parts of his famed Ox role from ‘Belly’. Khaled comes to Ox with a plan to uplift and unify the youth with the “keys.”

Sampling The Fugees, the video transitions to the song part of the clip. Nas spits his knowledge for the youth, drops a few “Major Keys.” Although Hype WIlliams is not the director on this one, Khaled and Eif Rivera do a great job of alluding the big budget videos from back in the day.

In the last clip DJ Khaled is seen dancing, surrounded by women wearing traditional costumes and headdresses for a mini dancehall breakdown. The biggest key dropped, and the #1 ting we should take away from this song, is Nas has a new album on the way, and according to the title of the track, its done.

Nas releases “It Was Written” 20 Years Ago Today

It Was Written was released 20 years ago, on July 2, 1996. It debuted at #1 and went on to become Nas’ best-selling album while also featuring some of his most memorable songs. Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones blessed the rap world with his multiplatinum sophomore LP. It Was Written was produced by the legendary Trackmasters and DJ Premier.

The 22-year-old Brooklyn-born emcee consciously pushed the album in a more mainstream direction, hoping to secure a wider fan base. Well It worked.

The album proved to be Nas’ most commercially successful release, debuting at #1 on the US Billboard 200 chart. It’s viewed by music critics as one of Nas’ strongest records and remains his best-selling release, with over four million copies sold in the U.S. alone.

One of the album’s standout singles, “If I Ruled the World,” featured Lauryn Hill, who (at the time) was riding the wave of her recent success with The Fugees. Other guests included Foxy Brown, Dr. Dre and Mobb Deep.

Nas – If I Ruled the World (Ft. Lauryn Hill) by lil_scrappy094

It Was Written is a classic. It stands up against any other classic hip-hop album. It was the benchmark for what Nas is capable of, that he could make big pop records that are also hood records.

Illmatic sold 500,000 units. It Was Written sold 3.5 or 3.6 million. He gained five-times his audience with It Was Written.

Today in Hip Hop History – The Firm: The Album

The Firm

The Album, also known as The Firm: The Album, is the first and only LP from hip hop supergroup The Firm. Originally released Oct. 21, 1997, The Album, was released for Aftermath/Interscope. Major players on this project include Nas, Foxy Brown, AZ, and Nature. Dr. Dre and the Trackmasters share equal billing as supervising producers. Prior to the formation of The Firm, members and affiliates of the project were at transitional stages in their careers. It is said that the title of the album, as well as the group’s name was inspired by John Grisham’s 1991 legal thriller novel The Firm. The Album is an auditory journey into the lives of a handful of notorious individuals living a gangsta lifestyle.
