Forbes Lists Top 5 Wealthiest Hip-Hop Artists

IMG_1079

Today, Forbes releases “The Forbes Five” list, which consists of the top five wealthiest artists in hip-hop in the game right now.

Seems like every year, the same classic hip hop artist consistantly take the top spots: P. Diddy ($750 million), Dr. Dre ($710 million) and Jay Z ($610 million).

This year, to our surprise, Drake landed in at No. 5, at an estimated net worth of $60 million dollars. According to Forbes, Drakes deals with Sprite, Apple Music and the Toronto Raptors, and his growing OVO Sound label are what helped increase his income over the last year.

Last year’s list had 50 Cent in the top 5, but due to him declaring bankruptcy, I don’t see him landing anywhere near the top of the list again.

Although his value has dropped $30 million due to owing money to his artist, Birdman is still in the top five landing at No. 4, $110 million. Forbes attributes the drop of value to “turmoil in his empire,” including reportedly owing Young Money signees (Drake, Nicki Minaj, Tyga) a bunch of money and beef with Lil Wayne.

1 Diddy ($750M)
2 Dr. Dre ($710M)
3 JAY Z ($610M)
4 Birdman ($110M)
5 Drake ($60M)

The D.O.C. on Co-Writing Dr. Dre’s ‘The Chronic’ & Paperwork Not Being Right

As DJ Vlad lists tracks off of Dr. Dre’s legendary “The Chronic” album, The D.O.C. recalls contributing to some of the biggest hits on the multi-platinum selling album. During the interview, he talks about working on “Nothin’ But A ‘G’ Thang” with Snoop Dogg telling DJ Vlad, “That was one of the first records that Snoop and I worked together on.” He said, “It was me imparting—if you will—to him the formula, for lack of a better way.” As The D.O.C. reminisced about working on most of the album, he admits further into the interview that his alcohol and drug habits may have been the reason behind his improper paperwork. “It’s not about them, it’s about me. I’m drinking everyday. I’m probably doing drugs everyday.”

Dre and Ice Cube Become Defendants In Suge Knight Wrongful Death Lawsuit

The horrific accident that we all wish didn’t happen when Terry Carter and the former NWA executive Suge Knight got into an altercation, resulting in Carter’s death, on the set of new NWA biopic production has been shone light on again with another lawsuit.

In the new case, Lilian Carter, widow of Terry Carter has targeted Universal Pictures and others involved (Dr.Dre and Ice Cube) for being negligent towards Knight’s gang-affiliated past and long standing problems with people working on the film.

Apparently, the suit hold’s Dr. Dre and Ice Cube accountable given that
given that Knight would never have needed to rush out of Tam’s parking lot if he had not been threatened by one of the gang members on set.

The Carter family is also suing Tam’s Burgers for not having adequate security in their parking lot. Read the full CNN article here.

Knight is being held on a $25 million bail for original charges of hit-and-run, attempted murder, and murder case.

Dr. Dre Named Forbes’ Highest Paid Musician Of 2014

Tyrese is saying Forbes needs to go back and update their list.  With the news this past week of Apple aquiring Beats Electronics for 3.2 Billion dollars, spotlights the question: Is Dr. Dre the “First Billionaire in Hip Hop?” Watch the video above and see Mr. Beat man boast “The first billionaire in hip-hop, right here from the mother-f$%&*#$ West Coast, believe that!”

Wnwelht

According to Billboard:

Beats Electronics is a privately held company and therefore does not have to make detailed financial information public. Companies only have to make that information available when they register for IPOs, according to SEC regulations.

Dre’s stake in Beats is estimated to be in the 20-25% range. If he were to earn that amount directly from the $3.2 billion sale his take would be somewhere between $640 million and $800 million, before taxes. With that amount, combined with his earnings of $550 million last year as well as his other income streams (album sales, publishing royalties, his work with HP laptops) the hip-hop legend would be very close to a net worth of a billion dollars.

So: If the deal doesn’t make Dre the first hip-hop billionaire, it definitely puts him close to it. It’s a many Gs thang.

Today in Hip Hop History – The Firm: The Album

The Firm

The Album, also known as The Firm: The Album, is the first and only LP from hip hop supergroup The Firm. Originally released Oct. 21, 1997, The Album, was released for Aftermath/Interscope. Major players on this project include Nas, Foxy Brown, AZ, and Nature. Dr. Dre and the Trackmasters share equal billing as supervising producers. Prior to the formation of The Firm, members and affiliates of the project were at transitional stages in their careers. It is said that the title of the album, as well as the group’s name was inspired by John Grisham’s 1991 legal thriller novel The Firm. The Album is an auditory journey into the lives of a handful of notorious individuals living a gangsta lifestyle.
